Hartlepool Business Awards 2024 Award Categories Now Open

One of the main categories at this September’s Hartlepool Business Awards has been renamed as a tribute to a well-known and respected local businessman.

The Business Leader of the Year will now be known as the Peter Olsen Award following his passing in March and organisers believe it is worthy recognition for the impact he had on the town’s business community.

The newly-named award will recognise outstanding contribution to Hartlepool and the wider community.

Nominations for this year’s 12 categories have officially gone live and those interested in nominating either themselves or a local business have until July 31 to do so on the website.

Peter, who died aged 75, was previously the chair of the Hartlepool Economic Forum and Tourism Forum until last year and he was a driving force behind the Awards before the Covid pandemic along with Brian Beaumont.

He was also an ex-Partner of Waltons Business Advisers and former chairman and treasurer at West Hartlepool Rugby Club.

Christine Hall, the vice chair of the revamped Hartlepool Business Forum, believes the decision to honour Peter by naming an award after him was fitting.

Christine, a business consultant, said: “Peter supported and steered many businesses as well as supporting the local authority as a grant panel member to assess and share his expertise in the decision-making process.

“It is important to recognise the contribution Peter made, the generosity of his time given to help the local business community and it is only right and fitting that we recognise his valuable contribution.

“Peter established long standing business relationships and was very well respected amongst the community.

“He committed so much of his time to many organisations, such as Housing Hartlepool, West Hartlepool Rugby Club and the local business community via the Forum. There is no doubt that many businesses and individuals will have benefitted from Peter’s expertise.”

The Hartlepool Business Awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, September 19 at the Coleman Suite, Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield.

Local businesses are encouraged to enter a category, attend the ceremony or reserve a sponsorship package as quickly as possible.

Christine said: “I am delighted to be involved, alongside my fellow steering group members, having recently rebranded the Forum, refreshed the categories and, in particular, introducing the Peter Olsen award category. It will be fabulous to celebrate all that is great about Hartlepool.

“The business awards are such a great occasion to celebrate all that is good about our town and a real opportunity to showcase what amazing businesses we have here.

“They are important for so many reasons. For me the whole event raises the profile of our town, it creates a sense of pride in what we achieve in the business community and creates such a positive vibe. I would encourage as many businesses as possible to enter.”

The Awards will look to compile shortlists and find a winner for Best Business (49 employees or less), Best Large Business (50 employees or more), Best Professional Services Business, Best Manufacturing/Engineering Business, Best New Business,  Best Creative business, Best Digital,  Community Business of the Year, Best Leisure, Food & Hospitality Business, Young Entrepreneur Award (16-25), Best Charitable business and The Peter Olsen Award.
